BEER NEWS

Story #1: Can beer help heal brain injuries?  Zombies like brains! – According to a recent study published in the Archives of Surgery people who suffer a traumatic brain injury are more apt to survive if they had been drinking at the time of the injury. The finding “raises the intriguing possibility” that giving alcohol to brain injured patients may improve their outcome.

Story #2: World’s Draught Masters attack NYC!  MOOOAHAHA! – Today in New York City, draught masters from 32 countries are descending on New York City to perform the centuries old Belgian Pouring Ritual and compete for the 2009 Stella Artois World Draught Master title.

Story #3: Samuel Adams and Weihenstephan play Dr. Frankenstein- Germany’s Weihenstephan Brewery and America’s Sam Adams embark on mission to harness their 1,000 years of collective brewing knowledge in order to create a beer unlike any other.  Next spring the beast will be unveiled and Jim Koch will proclaim:  It’s alive!

BEER NEWS

Story #1: Beer tastes better out of glass? Rubbish! – According to Ian Watson, a freelance brewer and Australia’s first beer sommelier, the taste of beer will not be altered dramatically by the use of plastic glasses (instead of glass) in pubs. We beg to differ.  In fact, we know he’s wrong.

Story #2: Big Beer Duopoly Warning From Marin Institute – The Marin Institute, the alcohol industry watchdog, released a report last week criticizing the hasty approval of two beer mergers that left 80% of the United States beer market in the hands of two foreign companies — MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch InBev. They are calling on the Obama Administration to investigate the mergers hastily approved at the end of the Bush administration.

Story #3: 99 Bottles of Beer at the Museum (written by Jay R. Brooks on his Inside Bay Area column at the Oakland Tribune) – Beer history is on display at UC Berkeley in a new anthropological exhibit at the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley. Curator Ira Jacknis has an exhibit called  “99 Bottles of Beer: Global Brewing Traditions 2500 B.C. to the Present.”   More info about the exhibit can be found online at hearstmuseum.berkeley.edu/beer.

Story #4: Japanese fall for alcohol-free beer

UPDATES

Last week’s winner was  Cvfish who answered when and where the first commercial brewery in “America”? ANSWER: New Amsterdam – now NYC, Manhattan – in 1612 after colonists advertised in London newspapers for experienced brewers.  Fish won a golf DeCapper.  Congrats!

This week’s trivia question is… what?  You really didn’t think we were just gonna blurt it out here did you?  WATCH THE SHOW!  It’ll be worth your while since we’re giving away our second copy of George Wendt’s new book, Drinking with George!

BEER NEWS

Story #1: The Men’s Journal Top Five Beer Towns in the U.S. – No hate intended towards any of the cities on this list -they’re admirable, and most of them deserve to be on it, but any time you rattle off a “best beer anything” and Denver, Colorado is not listed… flag! Personal foul: not knowing about the beer culture.  Now, we’re not hometown homers by any means. In fact, it’s not so much the cities themselves that we have issue with as the beer douches that put this list together. We point out the bigger problems with their beer knowledge (or lack thereof)…

Story #2: Forbes Magazine says “Beer Levels the Playing Field” – A world-class brew can be made anywhere in the world, in any style. Unlike winemakers, who depend on local ingredients and growing conditions, brewers have options — and that’s part of what makes a brewer more like a chef than like a winemaker.  See why…

Story #3: “Monster” versus “Vermonster” – Hansen Beverage Co., the maker of the energy drink “Monster,” wants tiny Rock Art Brewery to stop using the name “Vermonster” on their brew and to compensate it for its attorneys’ fees.  Why?  Because the mega corp thinks it might confuse the consumer. Apparently they think we’re all mindless sheep because energy drinks are always confused with beer.  This is one fight the mega “Monster” wish it had never started cuz the public is going to rip it a new asshole.

Story #4: Time Magazine profiles a Palestinian brewery in the West Bank – Madees Khoury is 24 and the only woman brewer — or brewster — in the Middle East. She’s being groomed by her family to take over the Taybeh brewery, home of the only Palestinian beer. With just 2,000 residents, Taybeh is the last remaining all-Christian village in the Holy Land.  See what makes this such a unique brewery by watching the Time video “West Bank Brew: The Beer That Made Taybeh Famous”.

BEER NEWS

Story #1: 2009 Munich Oktoberfest is over - The number of revelers dropped slightly this year amid economic woes and tighter security.  “Only 5.7” million drinkers staggered through the beer tents during the two-week festival compared with 6 million the year before. However, fewer people drank more beer – 6.5 million liters were consumed, an increase from 6 million in 2008.

Story #2: New Belgium Pedals Further into Wisconsin – New Belgium Brewing, the third-largest craft brewer in the U.S., has just entered the Eau Claire, La Crosse, Menomonie and Wausau areas of Wisconsin.

Story #3: Raise a glass to U.S. beer travelWith more than 1,500 breweries across the U.S., beer is no longer just a drink — it’s a destination.

Story #4: Belgian Ales Instead of Wine – The beer world is changing due in large part to the influence of Belgian Ales, and many Americans are taking notice.   Like we’ve said here at BTTV… Beer is the Wine of ’09!
