BEER NEWS

Story #1: Behold the Can – The illustrious beer can celebrated its 75th birthday on Sunday, January 24th. Sadly, collectors of the can are lamenting their inability to get young people interested in the pastime.

Story #2: Homer’s Duff Beer makes a run for the border -  Would you drink a real Duff Beer? Rodrigo Contreras thinks so.  While watching The Simpsons back in 2002 he thought “Someone should do that. Why not me?”

Story #3:  Burger King to sell beer at fast food joints – Apparently not wanting to be upstaged by the animated Homer Simpson… the ever creepy costumed King is hoping to tap a whole new batch of customers by selling beer with burgers at the Whopper Bar.

Story #4: Maxim’s 25 Best New Beers – Maxim magazine seems to have heard the cries from the Beer Masses. Still, many of the beers on the list found in the February 2010 issue aren’t “new” – at least to Beer Geeks, but it’s still an improvement over their previous lists.  Great beer, super hot women… we’ll let ‘em slide.

BEER NEWS

Story #1: Stone to collaborate with other rock stars of the beer world – In our year end wrap up episode we talked about the trends we were likely to see in 2010.  One of them was the continued collaborative efforts between breweries. Well, Stone keeps the collabrew train rolling… last week they announced who they were going to team up with and it’s a helluva list!

Story #3: Chris Wright gets picked up by New York publisher! Author, beer geek, homebrewer and Colorado Springs resident Christ Wright has been self publishing “The Beer Journal” for over two years now. That changed recently when Skyhorse Publishing out of New York signed him to a deal. The target date for publication is next fall and will be printed in full color. Additionally, it will include an introduction from a very well known craft brewing pioneer. More details to come (including price, who will be writing the intro, etc.).

Story #4: Give a pint of blood, get a pint of beer – Cascade Regional Blood Services, a Tacoma-based blood center, is appealing to donors with an eye-catching offer: Give a pint of blood, get a pint of beer.

Story #5: Microbrew sales reach new heights in Japan – Microbrews only command a fraction of the beer-drinking market in Japa, but shipments in 2009 were expected to climb to 34,000 kiloliters -more than double the amount consumed in 2003, when just 14,000 kiloliters went out around the country.

BEER NEWS

Story #1: Is there an echo in this Beer Cave? – A century ago the Ebling Brewing Company chilled its beer in a series of caves – some more than 20 feet wide and 100 feet deep – built into a hill behind its headquarters in Melrose, New York.  Eventually the buildings were leveled and replaced with a crude parking lot and the caves were covered and forgotten.  Until now that is.
