BEER NEWS

Story #1: The Great Philly Beer Raids of 2010 – At the beginning of March more than a dozen armed State Police officers conducted simultaneous raids on three popular Philadelphia beer bars. The cops, who have been called “Eliot Ness and the Untouchables, as played by the Keystone Kops” confiscated over 60 gallons of expensive ales and lagers, which are now in State Police custody at an undisclosed location. Be sure to check out all these stories:  Abolish the PLCB — Rewrite the Code! and Why The PLCB Should Be Abolished (both by Lew Bryson);  Troopers raid popular bars for unlicensed beers (by Don “Joe Sixpack” Russell & Bob Warner at the Philadelphia Daily News);  Beer Radar (Don Russell’s blog); What the hell is happening in Pennsylvania? (by Joe McPhee at Malted Musings).

Story #2: The Brewers Association needs your help in supporting America’s small brewers – Request your U.S. Representative to become a co-sponsor of H.R. 4278, which seeks to enact a reduction in beer excise tax for America’s small brewers.

Story #3: Small brewery sitcom coming to Fox – “Strange Brew” is about a small successful family-owned brewery and the family’s struggles with working and living together. It will come from the “Will and Grace” creators, David Kohan and Mitch Mutchnik, who were nominated for 27 Golden Globes and won 51 awards.

Story #4: BrewDog in a Can? – BrewDog is experimenting with canning their beers and they want to hear your feedback and input on the idea.

BEER NEWS

Story #1: California’s Assembly Bill 1598 – We received a call for help from some of our California Tap Heads.  Apparently California – and some other states working on similar legislation – apparently don’t have anything more important to deal with than eradicating caffeine from beer and risky sexual behavior from your life.

Story #2: Congressman Peter DeFazio to Deliver Keynote Address at Craft Brewers Conference – Congressman Peter DeFazio will be the keynote speaker for the opening of the Brewers Association’s Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago on April 8.

Story #3: Brewery in Brazil pays Paris Hilton $54 million to advertise their beer – We here at Beer Tap TV will do it for much, much less then that.

Story #4: Microsoft bans the beer app – While you can “drink” a virtual beer on Apple’s iPhone, the very same app has been rejected by Microsoft because of a self-imposed “morals-based” content policy.

BEER NEWS

Story #1: UPS, FedEx side with wine in beer battle – Boise-based Internet beer retailer Brewforia.com, owned and operated by Rick Boyd, may have to give up the Internet part of the business now that UPS has decided to stop delivering beer to his customers.

Story #2: Beer Distribution Problems Brewing – The US now has over 1,500 breweries, 2,800 beer distributors, and approximately 530,000 retail businesses that sell beer and over 600 SKUs. As the number of SKUs increases, the need for automation becomes more and more of a factor in an industry that hates change.

Story #3: The New Old Way to Tote Your Beer – Growlers are 64-ounce glass vessels that look like a moonshine jug. Most breweries and brewpubs have them so you can fill ‘em up with their beer and take ‘em home to drink. Well, it seems they’ve become the beer accessory of the moment.  Not to – as the author put it, us “bearded, flannel-shirt, beer-geeks” – but to the mainstream public.  And that is a good thing.

Story #4: Craft brewer sales grow 7% in a year of decreased beer sales for other brewers – The Brewers Association just released 2009 data on the U.S. craft brewing industry. In a year when other brewers saw a slowdown in sales, small and independent craft brewers saw sales dollars increase 10.3% and volume increase 7.2% over 2008, representing a growth of 613,992 barrels equal to roughly 8.5 million cases.
