BEER NEWS

Story #1: UPS, FedEx side with wine in beer battle – Boise-based Internet beer retailer Brewforia.com, owned and operated by Rick Boyd, may have to give up the Internet part of the business now that UPS has decided to stop delivering beer to his customers.

Story #2: Beer Distribution Problems Brewing – The US now has over 1,500 breweries, 2,800 beer distributors, and approximately 530,000 retail businesses that sell beer and over 600 SKUs. As the number of SKUs increases, the need for automation becomes more and more of a factor in an industry that hates change.

Story #3: The New Old Way to Tote Your Beer – Growlers are 64-ounce glass vessels that look like a moonshine jug. Most breweries and brewpubs have them so you can fill ‘em up with their beer and take ‘em home to drink. Well, it seems they’ve become the beer accessory of the moment. Not to – as the author put it, us “bearded, flannel-shirt, beer-geeks” – but to the mainstream public. And that is a good thing.

Story #4: Craft brewer sales grow 7% in a year of decreased beer sales for other brewers – The Brewers Association just released 2009 data on the U.S. craft brewing industry. In a year when other brewers saw a slowdown in sales, small and independent craft brewers saw sales dollars increase 10.3% and volume increase 7.2% over 2008, representing a growth of 613,992 barrels equal to roughly 8.5 million cases.

Deadlift Imperial IPA – Widmer Brewing Company – Portland, OR: Deadlift’s flavor stems in part from the Nelson Sauvin hops imported from South Island’s Nelson, New Zealand’s top hop growing region. These hops have an intense citrus, fruity, beer-like aroma and flavor not found in any other variety giving Deadlift a simple but fully braces malt backbone with enough malty sweetness and caramel character to complement the incredibly robust hop aroma and flavor. Available on tap and in bottles year-round at select West Coast retailers for a suggested retail price of $8.99 per four-pack. This is the first time Widmer has offered a four-pack instead of a traditional six-pack. ABV: 8.6%

Story #1: Behold the Can – The illustrious beer can celebrated its 75th birthday on Sunday, January 24th. Sadly, collectors of the can are lamenting their inability to get young people interested in the pastime.

Story #2: Homer’s Duff Beer makes a run for the border - Would you drink a real Duff Beer? Rodrigo Contreras thinks so. While watching The Simpsons back in 2002 he thought “Someone should do that. Why not me?”

Story #3: Burger King to sell beer at fast food joints – Apparently not wanting to be upstaged by the animated Homer Simpson… the ever creepy costumed King is hoping to tap a whole new batch of customers by selling beer with burgers at the Whopper Bar.

Story #4: Maxim’s 25 Best New Beers – Maxim magazine seems to have heard the cries from the Beer Masses. Still, many of the beers on the list found in the February 2010 issue aren’t “new” – at least to Beer Geeks, but it’s still an improvement over their previous lists. Great beer, super hot women… we’ll let ‘em slide.

BEER RELEASE OF THE WEEK

Over 40 years dead. Brewed with an obscene amount of malts and hops. Shocking flavors – far beyond contemporary community standards. ABV: 10%

BEER BAR OF THE WEEK

The Head House – Philadelphia Beer Week co-founder and president of Museum Catering, Bruce Nichols announce that he will partner with Madame Saito to open The Head House (122 Lombard Street), a restaurant and beer bar with more than 20 craft taps and beer-friendly foods located on Philadelphia’s historic Head House Square.

Beer Tap TV News:

This week Eli and Erik talk about the Guinness Brewery nearly blowing up as well as the top beer stories of the past year. Plus, they get Abstrakt and go all BarBeerian while tossing back a few beers. Join them for the last Beer Buzz of this decade… here on Beer Tap TV!

Beer Buzz is the ONLY weekly, televised show that keeps you up to date on what’s going on in the beer world, from the noteworthy to the nutty. Know something we don’t (which is highly likely)? Email us at alwayshoppy@beertaptv.com and share the news!

Show Notes:

UPDATES

Last week’s winner was BrewDog (AKA Andrew, our resident Beer News Hound) who correctly answered: What does the Christmas expression “yuletide” actually mean? The answer we were looking for was ale-tide, which was included with his dictionary sized reply. Congrats to Andrew who says he’s been looking for a legit pair of Hefe glasses for awhile. Now you have some!

This week’s trivia question is… NOT! By the way, we moved it around. Starting now it will never be in the same place, so you’ll have to watch the entire episode to see where we ask the trivia question. It’s one of our many New Year’s Resolutions. But you’ll want to stick around because this week we’re giving away the biggest prize package EVER!

Hey, don’t forget… there’s a full blue moon tonight! If you didn’t see yesterday’s episode of Taste Buds (featuring Blue Moon’s Grand Cru)… go watch it!

If you’d rather watch us in High-Def on your Big Screen… we’re now on TiVo under the Food & Drink section. We’re also on Facebook and YouTube!

We filmed a ton of video at this year’s GABF. Go watch it here –> Beer Tap TV GABF page and on the GABF video hub page on Examiner.com.

BEER NEWS

Story #1: The Guinness brewery almost blew up! – Last week news that the Guinness Brewery caught fire spread like… well, wildfire. But did you know that the entire St. James Gate complex in Dublin came within moments of blowing up?

Story #2: The Year in Craft Beer: Top 10 Stories – We cover the top 10 craft beer stories of the year as noted by BeerNews.org. According to the BeerSage this isn’t a completely subjective list as these are the stories that got the most hits on his site during the year. We go through the list, then expand on what we covered here on Beer Tap TV. It’s been a great year for craft beer!

BEER RELEASE OF THE WEEK

Abstrakt from BrewDog – Abstrakt will be the concept beer outlet for BrewDog and Abstrakt will only ever brew and release a beer once. BrewDog’s Abstrakt is about exciting, progressive and conceptual beers, beer which not only push the boundaries but smash them up completely.
