SHOW NOTES:

In this special New Year’s Eve episode Dusty and Erik help you drink in 2009 with reviews on two extremely high ABV beers.  These “big boy britches” brews will definitely let you get your swurve on!  Did you know that beer is the new champagne?  It is!  So says Beer Tap TV!

Dogfish Head in Delaware is known for making some off centered beers.  Fort is no different. Billed as “The World’s Strongest Fruit Beer.”  At 18% ABV, it’s stronger then most wines.  This brew has over a ton of Oregon and Delaware raspberries mixed in over a two-month primary fermentation period. Includes Warrior hops (45 IBUs), 915 pils malt and 9% malted wheat.

Mephistopheles’ Stout from Avery Brewing Co. in Boulder, Colorado, ain’t no slouch either.  This devilish brew weighs in at a mega-hefty 16% ABV! Coal black, this bad boy smells of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. IBU’s 107.

Needless to say, the gang was having a merry ole time after tasting these too most massive brews.  Everyone here at Beer Tap TV wishes all of you a very Hoppy Brew Year!

Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence (Ommegang Brewery, Cooperstown, NY)

The aroma of dark chocolate and dark malts combines with the Perle hops compliments, making the beer savory to the senses.  Ommegang uses a special strand of Belgian yeast which introduces the distinct fruity note.

The resulting beer has a big, malty character with complex aromas and flavors of chocolate, honey and vanilla in the beer.

ABV -   5.5%
Malts – TWo row pale, Carmel, Munich, Choclate
Hops -  Tettnang, Tettnanger and Spalt-Spalter Noble

SHOW NOTES:

In this episode Erik and Dusty go head-to-head with one brew… Pike Brewing Company’s Pike Entire Wood Aged Stout.

This ain’t your daddy’s wood aged stout. Think of this not as one beer, but a mixture of three of Pike’s beers:

  • XXXXX Extra Stout, original gravity 10.73, 7.00% ABV
  • XXXXX Extra Stout aged 6+ months in oak Bourbon barrels
  • Imperial Stout, original gravity of 10.98, massive 12% ABV

The blend contains 42.7% barrel aged beer and weighs in at a heft 9.5% alcohol. According to the PR sheet, “the taste is complex with velvety malt tones, a coffee aroma, and a palate and finish of bitter chocolate.” The pale and crystal malts, along with roasted barley, is balanced by a heaping dose of Yakima Valley Willamette, Goldings and Columbus hops in the boil, then finished off with even more Willamette and Goldings. Topping it off “are the underlying wood tones perfumed by the caramel sweetness of wood-aged Kentucky Bourbon.”

Wooo-eeee!

The Taste Bud boys venture into Barleywine territory!  On this episode Erik and Dusty sample Rogue Brewery’s Old Crustacean and Hog Heaven from Avery Brewing.

What are barleywine’s exactly?  Here’s a tidbit from Rogue’s website:

In Britain, seasonal brews for winter are high in alcohol, robust, malty, and dark. The two main styles of these brews are Old Ales and Barleywines. As the name suggests, barleywines are similar to wines in alcohol and need aging but are derived from grain, not the grape.
