Taste Buds 062: Happy Birthday Dusty! (A Boulevard Saison for the chubby kid)

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: This golden ale is delightfully effervescent and generously hopped.  Hints of lemon zest appear in the slightly phenolic aroma, while the flavor brings spicy taste of black pepper and lemon grass.  Citrus and pineapple notes are discernible in the slightly astringent finish.  Smokestack Saison is brewed with two-row pale malt, malted wheat, and a pinch of corn.  In addition to Magnum and Simcoe hops, we use a new variety called Amarillo, which contributes to the citrusy flavor of the beer.

IBUs:  30
OG:  14 degrees Plato
Final:  2.2 degrees Plato
ABV:  6.2%

From Us:

This was Dusty’s first Saison…EVER, and he really dug it, appreciating the deep flavor profile and more of the floral tones.  Erik, while agreeing that this beer is absolutely true to the style and a very solid effort by the brewer, would have liked to see a little more spice to it, but for 99.9% of the saison drinkers out there, and especially for first time saison drinkers, you will absolutely not be disappointed with this beer.

Beer Tip: Watch your temperature, especially with Saison’s.  This beer will open up tremendously in the mid 40’s, drink it too cold and you will be disappointed, and it will be your fault.

Taste Buds 061: Luck ‘o the Irish (Odell’s Red)

Friday, March 27th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: The Rocky Mountain Goat is no ordinary goat. Just like Odell Red is no ordinary red. We took the American-style red to a whole new level by adding a variety of aggressive American hops—giving this ale a distinctive fresh hop aroma and flavor. We think you’ll agree this red has some serious kick.  Available February – May of ‘09;   6.5% Alcohol By Volume

From Us: Grab your claymore and kilt and get ready to rock the weekend cuz this beer rocks!

Beer Tip: Drink your beers at the right temperature.  Beer served too cold won’t release the proper and intended flavors.

Taste Buds 060: Respect Your Mama’s Can (Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yella Pils)

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Mam’s Little Yella Pils is a delicious, small-batch version of the beer that made Pilsen, Czechoslovakia famous. Mama’s is made with hearty amounts of pale malt, German specialty malts, and traditional (Saaz) and 21st century Bavarian hops. It’s the perfect antidote for the watered-down, cornfed versions of pilsner clogging America’s shelves. Our first canned lager, it’s also fermented at cool temperatures with a German yeast. While it’s rich with Czeched-out flavor, Mama’s gentle hopping (about 35 IBUs) and low ABV (just 5.3%) makes it a luxurious but low-dose beer. Look for our Gold Metal Winner on US shelves in March. Sadly, the Feds rejected our “Take Two and Call Us in the Morning” line on the can.

From Us: To be completely honest, we are not a fan of Pilsners as a rule, however…

Beer Tip: Using the right glassware actually does affect the overall palatability of the beer.

Taste Buds 059: This Rusky Means Bidniss (Sam Adams Imperial Stout)

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Samuel Adams® Imperial Stout is our take on the traditional Russian Imperial Stouts from the 18th century.   While this style originated in England, it is a style now known for being uniquely American as craft Brewers have taken this it to whole new level of flavor and complexity.  We think we raised the bar again.  Samuel Adams® Imperial Stout is a massive beer filled with big, dark flavors.  It has been a brewery favorite in recent years and we are excited to share this intense brew with you.

From Us: They ain’t lyin’.  This is a big beer.  It comes at you with both barrels loaded.  Definitely has a deep flavor profile with a strong malt character and some darker tones you would expect out of a stout.

BEER TIP:  Try your first sip of this with your nose plugged, see if you taste something different.

SHOW NOTES:

Somehow this unique little brew slipped through our fingers this winter.  Unique as in a nut brown you ask?  Shit no, everyone is doing them. This is unique in that it’s a Leinenkugel’s brew that has a pretty different pallet to it.  Most aren’t overly eventful… but this one has some depth.
