Taste Buds 072: Boule-Belgi (Boulevard ZON Belgian)

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Boulevard’s summer seasonal is our interpretation of a classic Belgian witbier. ZŌN (Flemish for “sun”) combines the subtle flavors of coriander and orange peel with other traditional ingredients to create a delightful, refreshing summertime brew. Available from May through August, in bottles and draught.

ABV: 3.5% by weight, 4.4% by volume
IBUS: 12
INGREDIENTS: Pale malt, unmalted soft red winter wheat & malted white wheat. Magnum and Simcoe hops
STARTING GRAVITY: 10.8 degrees Plato

From Us: Erik and Dusty throw back some Boulevard Belgian, ZON. It is a solid Belgian, but does very little to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Taste Buds 071: Australian for Booooring (Tooheys)

Monday, April 27th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Nothing. Their website talks a lot about how cold the beer is, and how cool the glass is, and how great the L.E.D. lights on the sign are… but not much about their beer.  Wise choice.

From Us: Narrow, simple and uneventful.  This is the Bud Light of Australian Lagers.

Taste Buds 070: Oh My God, Another Ommegang (Hennepin)

Friday, April 24th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: As you pour this rich golden ale into your glass, consider your surroundings. Are you in a restaurant? Outside on the deck? Is it hot and humid? Cold and brisk? Take a drink. Feel the way Hennepin is bright and lively in your mouth with a warming mix of spicy gingersnap and citrusy hops. Refreshing. Relaxing. It’s true: no matter where you are, Hennepin is the perfect ale for all seasons.

From Us: This Belgian got Erik & Dusty so happy they were ready to stand up and dance!  Get it on, bang a gong… Ommegang!

Taste Buds 069: The Chubby Monkey Returns (and drinks some Pike Monk’s Uncle)

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Monk’s Uncle Triple (from Pike Brewing Company in Portland, Oregon) is brewed as a spring seasonal, became the first Pike beer to use Belgium yeast.  Pike Monk’s Uncle Triple 9% alcohol by volume is brewed with organic malt and sugar.  It is golden, full-bodied and complex with a yeasty nose, fruity esters and malty dryness. There are hints of honey, spice and exotic fruit that play with the senses.

From Us: They got nothin’ because the guys were too damn drunk to remember what they said!  They remember likin’ it a whole lot though (especially Eli, who is a big Belgian fan).

Taste Buds 068: On a Pale Trout We Ride (Uinta’s Anglers Pale Ale)

Monday, April 20th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Uinta Brewing Company’s Anglers Pale Ale is a traditional northwest style pale ale with its rich copper color and clean yet complex malty fullness.

From Us: This is a rock & rollin’, kick ass campin’ & fishin’ beer.

Taste Buds 067: Purple Haze All In My Brain (Abita Purple Haze)

Friday, April 10th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Purple Haze is a crisp, American style wheat beer (and a song by Jimmy Hendrix) with raspberry puree added after filtration. Therefore, you may see raspberry pulp in the beer. The raspberries provide the lager with a subtle purple coloration and haze, a fruity aroma, and a tartly sweet taste.

ABV:  4.2%
IBU: 13

Nutrition Facts (12 oz serving)
Calories: 128
Carbs:  11g
Protein:  1.8g
Total Fat:  0g

From Us: While Erik isn’t a fan of fruity Beers, Eli is secure enough in his manhood to rise above the stigma of these oft put upon “foofy lala” beers.   Abita’s Raspberry Wheat has just enough raspberry notes to make this a refreshing beer and not a syrupy kick to the head.

Taste Buds 066: Blowin’ Steam Up Your Skirt (Steamworks Colorado Kolsch)

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: The Colorado Kölsch is a derivative of German Kölschs, which were created in response to the popular lager-based Pilsners being produced in the Czech Republic in the 1840s. For those of you who haven’t studied your beer history, that means it’s a light crisp ale with a hint of sweetness. And very refreshing.

Alcohol by Volume – 4.5%
International Bitterness Units – 17
Standard Reference Method – 3.2

From Us: At first blush this looks like colored water, but don’t let the looks fool you.  Turns out this Silver Medal winning brew is a great summertime session beer.

Taste Buds 065 – An IPA From The Hamptons (Southampton IPA)

Monday, April 6th, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Southampton Brewmaster Phil Markowski has combined the best of both styles of his IPA.  He’s crafted an ale with the bold citrusy hop character of an American IPA and the maliter, more refined flavor of an English IPA.  Although the defining characteristics of Southapmton IPA is balance, its incredible blend of three American and two British hop varieties is sure to please any hophead.

IBUs:  40
ABV:  6/2%
OG  14.2 Plato
Grains:  2-row malt, British caramel malt and wheat malt
Hops:  Centennial, Cascade, Vanguard, East Kent Goldings and UK Fuggles

From Us: Erik and Dusty were surprised by this beer. It isn’t nearly as hoppy as you would expect from an IPA, especially during the Great Hop Wars of 2009. It has a nice malty balance to the beer, is fairly narrow on the front of the pallet and opens up just slightly on the back for more depth. It could have a little better expansion on the back-end, but overall it is a solid effort.

Taste Buds 064: It’s A Lale! (Alaskan Amber)

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: Alt. The name of this beer style comes from the German word “alt” meaning “old”. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness. Richly malty and long on the palate, with just enough hop backing to make this beautiful amber colored “alt” style beer notably well balanced. Alaskan Amber is made from glacier-fed water and a generous blend of the finest quality European and Pacific Northwest hop varieties and premium two-row pale and specialty malts.  Our water originates in the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice Field and the more than 90 inches of rainfall we receive each year.

OG: 1.054
ABV: 5.3%
IBU: 18

Taste Buds 063: Tommy Comes Knockin’ with a Whacker (Tommyknocker Jack Whacker Wheat)

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

SHOW NOTES:

From The Brewer: This American-style wheat ale (4.7% ABV) is a light, unfiltered brew with a citrus aroma andflavor imparted by a late addition of lemon grass. This unfiltered beer retains all of its protein, flavor, and some of its yeast, resulting in a traditionally cloudy appearance. It’s the perfect refreshment for a thirsty, trail weary, ale lover. 1998 Westword Mag. “Best of”.  2000 North American Brewers Assoc. Gold Medal.  2002 CO State Fair Best Wheat Beer.  2003 Westword Mag. “Best of”. 2005 GABF Silver Medal.  2006 World Beer Cup Silver Medal.

From Us: We dogged Tommyknocker way back when, but it was because we got a bad bottle.  These guys continues to impress us with the beers they make in their little brewery in the mountains.

Beer Tip: Stir the wheats, not the Belgians.
