Taste Buds 085: D.O.A.

Friday, May 29th, 2009

BEER TAP TV NEWS:

Due to… let’s call ‘em “technical difficulties”… episode #85 of Taste Buds… let’s just say, “vanished into the ether.”  Thus, there is no TB for today.  We will however be re-filming it once Erik is back from his “irie” vacation.  We’ll label it #85a, and call it The Lost Episode. ;)

Tune in on Monday for more beer fun and frivolity! Until then… have a great weekend everybody!

Taste Buds 084: Dubel Trubel (Pike Tandem)

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

From The Brewer: Pike Tandem Double includes the same yeast strain used from the Westmalle Monastery. It’s cocoa colored, smooth, round, nutty and complex with flavors of freshly baked bread. It is stylish and sensual without bitterness. In addition to hops, coriander is used as a seasoning.

ABV: 7.00%
IBUs: 25
Hops:  Northern Brewer, Mt. Hood
Malts:  Pale, Crystal-Wheat, roasted

From Us: The Pike Brewing Company in Seattle once again kicks a cool name – and a tasty beer – for their Double, The Pike Tandem.

Taste Buds 083: The Amazing Macro Mystery Beer

Monday, May 25th, 2009

From The Brewer: Hop Hound Amber Wheat from AB is an unfiltered amber wheat ale with a slight caramel sweetness and refreshing citrus note.  It’s brewed with Cascade and Willamette hops from the Pacific Northwest and imported Hallertau hops from southern Germany. This amber wheat ale gets its tawny hue from a blend of the finest caramel, wheat and pale barley malts.

From Us: While in New Orleans Erik was forced to drink a premium beer because one location had no craft.  He ended up drinking a Hop Hound from Michelob and was really impressed (hats off to Kristi Zantop) .  Dusty had no clue what he was drinking, so watch the show to see what he thinks.

Taste Buds 82: What a Long Strange Tripel it has been (Boulevard Tripel)

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

From The Brewer: http://boulevardbrewing.com/smokestack/

ABV- 9.0%
IBUs – 30
Availability: Part of the Brewmasters Collection.

From Us: The first thing we noticed was a TON of sediment in this bottle, and I do mean a TON.  Just uncorking it raised a bunch of it into the beer, and it never did settle down, like some weird Star Trek elixir, it just stay suspended in the beer for ever.  On the nose we got a the typical Belgian yeast you would expect, but the flavor surprised us.  A much thicker, maltier creamy taste for sure, with a nice smooth, sweet finish.

Taste Buds 81: Blackberry Witbier from Sam

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

From The Brewer: The blackberries we use in Samuel Adams® Blackberry Witbier are perfect for this brew.   They deliver a subtle sweetness that balances the traditional citrus flavors from the witbier.  The blackberries used in Samuel Adams Blackberry Witbier are sourced from family farms, located at the foot of the Oregon Trail and Cascade Mountains in Western Oregon, where they have been growing some of the best blackberries in the world for centuries.  By bringing the blackberries, orange and coriander together with an appealing malt character and a spiciness from the hops, we’ve brewed a flavorful beer with a smooth finish that’s both sweet and tart.

ABV- 5.5%
IBUs – —
Availability: Part of the Brewmasters Collection.

From Us: This is another solid effort from Koch and crew.  I am not sure anything could touch us in such a special place like the double chocolate stout did, but this is a great beer for the BBQ on Memorial Day, low ABV, sessionable and refreshing.  The blackberry is noticeable yet not at all over-powering.

Taste Buds 080: Erik Is Speechless for Full Sail IPA

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

From The Brewer: The British colonists who once visited India invented India Pale Ale. But we seriously doubt they ever enjoyed one after a day of fullblown kiteboarding. What a shame. Generously hopped to 60 IBU’s in the classic style, our IPA is a real thirst quencher. It has a full, malty body and there’s even a  hint of fresh citrus to it. Perfect after your favorite water sport. Even if that happens to be the grueling drag-the-poolside-lounge-chair-into-the-sun event.

ABV- ???%
IBUs – 60
Availability: Year-round in 12-ounce bottles and cans, 12-pack cans and on draft.

From Us: Dusty really liked it.  Erik didn’t say much, but Dusty thinks he liked it as well.

Taste Buds 079 Duvel

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

ABV- 8.8%

Availability: Year-round in 12-ounce bottles and cans, 12-pack cans and on draft.

From Us: Duvel has a big following, and from what we can tell, it doesn’t deserve it.  It is good, but not any better than any other belgian out there, and less impressive than some.

Taste Buds 078 Boulevard Wheat

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

From The Brewer: Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat Beer is a lively, refreshing ale with a naturally citrusy flavor and distinctive cloudy appearance. This easy-drinking American-style wheat beer has become our most popular offering, and the best-selling craft beer in the Midwest.

SENSORY DESCRIPTION: Subtle flavor profile with hints of wheat and grain works well as a compliment to lighter dishes. Mild sweetness compliments fruity dishes. Flavor hooks: subtle fruit

PAIRINGS: Very light foods including salads, sushi, vegetable dishes or fruity desserts. Grilled chicken and boiled, steamed or broiled seafood, breads and pizza. Feta, Gouda or Gruyere cheeses also pair well

ABV- 4.4%
IBUs – 13
Availability: Year-round in 12-ounce bottles and cans, 12-pack cans and on draft.

From Us: Quite different than what you would expect from a wheat. Fire up the BBQ.

Taste Buds 077: Steamworked (Steam Engine Lager)

Monday, May 11th, 2009

From The Brewer: Steam Engine Lager is an American classic noted for its malt sweetness and hop spice with a smooth, dry finish. It is arguably the best American-style Amber Lager in the world.

ABV- 5.3%
IBUs – 25
Availability: Year-round in 12-ounce bottles and cans, 12-pack cans and on draft.

From Us: This brew is a very sessionable lager.  Nice balance between the hops and malt.

Taste Buds 076: Willy & The Hawk (Mendocino Eye of the Hawk)

Friday, May 8th, 2009

From The Brewer: The Eye of the Hawk Select Ale was first released in 1984 – a direct response to customer demand for a wider variety of our traditionally brewed ales. Eye of the Hawk Select Ale is produced year round. Generous amounts of Pale and Caramel malt and our special proprietary yeast strain produce an extremely well balanced ale with an alcohol 8% ABV (alcohol by volume). Eye of the Hawk Select Ale is coppery amber in color and characterized by a luxurious caramel malt flavor, a substantial mouth-feel and a slightly warming yet dry finish. Like all of the ales brewed by MBC, Eye of the Hawk Select Ale is bottle conditioned. Bottle Conditioning is a traditional Old World technique whereby actively fermenting yeast is introduced into the mature beer right before bottling, resulting in the development of natural carbonation and rich flavors in the bottle.

From Us: This brew might look like “crik” water, but it’s booger-licious!  It lets you know there’s beer in your mouth.
