Taste Buds 098: Redhook + Limited = Solid (Redhook Tripel)

Monday, June 29th, 2009

From The Brewer: Crafted with imported Belgian candy sugar, high quality European malts and a secret monastery yeast strain, the new Tripel Belgian-style ale from Redhook Ale Brewery will hit shelves for a limited time this summer. Pouring a deep golden color, the Redhook Tripel offers a three-part flavor profile created during the brewing process: vanilla and clove in the first sip, followed by a slight pepper and cinnamon kick, and ending with a clean, smooth finish and more hints of vanilla. The Tripel is a subtly sweet strong ale with a high carbonation level adding an effervescent quality akin to champagne. The fruity, spicy and warming characteristics balance with the soft malts to create an easy-to-drink yet complex brew, which earned a gold medal for the category at the 2008 North American Beer Awards. At 10.2% alcohol by volume, the Tripel is ready to drink now, but can also be cellared for up to two years to intensify the flavor. Redhook brewers recommend pairing the Tripel with acidic foods such as sharp cheeses, olives, smoked pork, salmon and bittersweet dark chocolate. The Redhook Tripel will be available in 22 oz. bottles (SRP $7.99) and on draught in western states in late May, with limited national availability following in late June. The Tripel will be on shelves at specialty food stores and beer markets through September, or until supplies run out. Redhook will introduce another limited release in the fall.

From Us:  Erik & Dusty throw back the latest limited release from Redhook in a kick ass glass!

Taste Buds 095: Lips of Faith (New Belgium Biere de Mars)

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

From The Brewer: For the first time in three years we are pleased to offer one of our favorite harbingers of spring, Biere de Mars. With earthy tones of ripe mango and lemon verbena, this bottle-conditioned ale reflects the hearty character of the southern Belgian and northern French countrysides. Brewed with barley, oats and wheat malt, Biere de Mars’ celestial orange hue inspired the planetary play on words. Brettanomyces, a wild yeast strain, added for bottle-conditioning creates a refreshingly sour flash across the palate. Lemon peel coupled with the lemon verbena imparts fruitlike character and a citrusy finish.

From Us: Watch the episode to see what Erik, Dusty and the drunk moose have to say about it.

Taste Buds 094: Das Brau Weisse (Ayinger Brau Weisse)

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

From The Brewer: Ayinger’s Brau Weisse is a delicious lemon-scented wheat beer with yeast. This is an aristocratic beer with a champagne sparkle and a beautifully sustained head. Pale in color, tart in palate—a brut beer. Experience as an aperitif or with your meal.

From Us: Dusty’s buddy over at Merchant du Vin was kind enough to send over some Ayinger Brau Weiss and a couple of glasses. See what this unique German Wheat Beer has to offer.

Taste Buds 093: Get Looped In (Odell St. Lupulin)

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

From The Brewer: A mystical legend echoes in our brewhouse – that of St. Lupulin (loop-you-lin) the archetypal hophead. He devoted endless summers to endless rows of hops, tending to the flowers and the beloved resin within – lupulin. The extraordinary oils in this yellow resin provide this dry-hopped extra pale ale with an undeniably pleasing floral aroma and clean, crisp finish. One sip of this seasonal summer ale and you too, will believe.  Available June – September ; ABV: 6.5%

From Us: Wandering the halls of Odell’s brewery is the ghost of pure hoppiness known as St. Lupulin. Will the flavor of this new seasonal brew match the coolness of the story?

Taste Buds 092: Alaska Brings the Hops (Alaskan IPA)

Monday, June 15th, 2009

From The Brewer: Alaskan IPA is honey gold in color with a fruity, citrus aroma. An enticing blend of hops and our dry hopping process, in which hops are added directly to tanks during fermentation, give this brew a very intense, complex aromatic character with a refreshing hop finish. Alaskan IPA is made from glacier-fed water and a generous blend of the finest quality European and Pacific Northwest hop varieties and premium two-row and specialty malts. Our water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field and from more than 90 inches of rainfall each year. ABV: 6.2%, OG: 1.057, IBUs: 55

Taste Buds 090: Roll Out the 5 Barrels of Fun (Odell 5 Barrel Pale Ale)

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

From The Brewer: The distinctive hop character of our 5 Barrel Pale Ale is due to the extraction of essential oils from select hops. We treat 5 Barrel Pale Ale to an infusion of fresh whole hop flowers in the Hop Back and the Fermentor, as well as four hop additions during the kettle boil. We like how this gives the beer a fresh, lively flavor and aroma.  ABV: 5.2%, IBUs: 36

Taste Buds 089: Big Bald Dude with Beard Scores! (Sam Adams Imperial White)

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

From The Brewer: Samuel Adams Imperial White is a new perspective on the classic witbier style. Witbiers are normally light and refreshing with a fruity finish and we wanted to see how these characteristics would stand up when we amped up the recipe. The result? We were totally blown away by the flavors that were created by this beer. This is not just a more intense version of our spring seasonal Samuel Adams White Ale. Imperial White is a new recipe that stands on it own merits. At 10.3% alcohol by volume, it really is more of a wine substitute than just another refreshing witbier. This is a beer that should be sipped and savored and you’ll be amazed at the flavors you’ll discover as the beer warms and opens up.
