Taste Buds 112: The View From the 10th Tower (Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA)

Friday, July 31st, 2009

From the Brewer: Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavored IPA. ABV: 6.5%;  IBUs: 60 IBU, Gravity: 16° Plato

From Us:  On this episode the  Yeasty Boys down an IPA made by Cali surfer dudes.  Does it appease the taste buds of Erik the Hophead?  Watch to find out!

Taste Buds 111: Festina Peche is not Joe Pesce’s sister (Dogfish Head Festina Peche)

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

From the Brewer: A refreshing neo-BerlinerWeisse fermented with honest-to-goodness peaches to 4.5% ABV (8 IBUs)! In our Festina Peche since the natural peach sugars are eaten by the yeast, the fruit complexity is woven into both the aroma and the taste of the beer so there is no need to doctor it with woodruff or raspberry syrup – open and enjoy!

From Us:  See what happens when you combine a whole lot of peaches  with a sour BerlinerWeisse beer.  Does Dusty go Mr. Ed?  Will Erik the Hophead like something this sour?  Watch to find out!

Taste Buds 110: Sniffin’ the Southland (Great Divide Belgica)

Monday, July 27th, 2009

From the Brewer: Belgica, the Roman name for the Low Counties – is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies – or the Ardennes. 7.2% ABV

From Us:  What happens when you combine Belgian yeast and American hops?  Find out what Dusty and Erik think of this exotic mish-mash of brewing traditions.

From the Brewer: Boont Amber Ale won the Silver Medal at the 2003 Great American Beer Festival, in the American-Style Amber/Red Ale category, has several other medals, as well, and was named the “best beer brewed in Northern California,” by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. It’s never sterile filtered nor heat pasteurized, and should be stored in refrigeration. However, to fully enjoy its rich and complex flavor, it should be served between 40° and 45°F  ABV: 5.8 %

“It’s bahl hornin’.”

Taste Buds 104: A Longshot She Be (Sam Adams Longshot Double IPA)

Monday, July 13th, 2009

From the Brewer: The Double IPA is brewed by Mike McDole, a member of the California-based homebrewing club, Club DOZE for over a decade.   Some have billed McDole’s Double IPA as a Pliny the Elder clone which is not far-fetched given he got the base recipe from Russian River’s Vinnie Cilurzo five years ago. The end result is a beer featuring seven different hops. McDole was actually a winner in 2007 but because of the hop shortage, his recipe couldn’t be brewed until 2008.

From Us:  Does Erik the Hophead do back flips for this double whammy IPA?  Will Dusty once again do his impersonation of Mr. Head?  Watch the episode to find!
