Monday, July 6th, 2009

From Us:  On this celebratory 101st episode of Taste Buds… school is in session as Erik, Dusty and the rest of the BTTV crew head to Durango, CO, and hang out at the World Headquarters of Ska Brewing Company.  On the show are some wild and crazy guys who can truly be called rock stars of the beer world including Dave Thibodeau, Bill Graham, Matt Vincent… and another guy who many of you may recognize — the one and only Greg “I Am a Craft Brewer” Koch from Stone Brewing Company in San Diego!  The fellas down some Stone Imperial Russian Stout and Ska’s Modus Hoperandi, and even do a blind taste comparison of the Modus from a can and a bottle.  Can you tell the difference?!  Watch the whole stone cold skatastic episode to find out!

Taste Buds 100: Instant Karma’s Gonna Getcha! (Avery Brewing Karma Ale)

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

From The Brewer: We believe in Karma. We suspect most of you do, too. It truly is a global concept. Very simply put, “you get what you give.” Inspired by this principle and the wonderful farmhouse and pale ales of Belgium, we’ve created Karma Ale, a decidedly fruity and estery ale, intricate in body and nose, all driven by a unique Belgian yeast strain. Remember, good things DO happen to good people. Here’s to being good!   ABV: 5.2%;  IBUs: 10;  OG: 1.048;  Hops – Sterling;  Malt – Two-row barley, Belgian special B, cara 45, aromatic

From Us:  On this episode of Taste Buds Eli sits in for Dusty, and Erik plays himself.  Plus, we crack open a bottle of Karma.   Does this Karma align with our karma?  Watch and find out!

Taste Buds 099: Wholly Allagash! (Allagash Confluence Ale)

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

From The Brewer: Allagash Confluence Ale is created with a mixed fermentation; utilizing our house primary Belgian style yeast in combination with our proprietary Brettanomyces strain. The two yeast strains work in tandem creating a marriage between spice and fruit flavors that ultimately leave a lingering silky mouth feel. Confluence is brewed with a blend of both imported pilsner and domestic pale malts as well as a portion of caramel malt, resulting in a complex malty profile. Tettnang and East Kent Golding hops are added in the brew process to balance the intricate malty profile while adding a sweet and spicy citrus aroma. After fermentation, Confluence undergoes a lengthy aging process in stainless steel tanks to enhance the flavors. Prior to bottling, it is dry hopped with a Glacier hops, providing a pleasant balance of aromas. Confluence is then bottle conditioned and aged in our cellar prior to release.  ABV: 7.5%;  OG: 1064

Recommended Cellaring Temp: 50°F
Recommended Serving Temp: 40-50°F

From Us:  We pop open a bottle of a rather limited Allagash brew. And what do we find inside? A beautiful bevy of Brettanomyces! Watch the episode to find out if this Belgian brew leaves a lingering silky mouth feel.
