Taste Buds 133: Beauty is in the Hands of the Beer Holder (Sam Adams Octoberfest)

Friday, September 18th, 2009

From the Brewer: Samuel Adams Octoberfest is a malt lover’s dream, blending together five roasts of barley to create a harmony of sweet flavors including caramel and toffee. The beer is kept from being overly sweet by the bitterness imparted by the German Noble hops.  This beer style was first brewed for the annual Oktoberfest, originally held in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of the Crown Prince of Bavaria.  The village green on which it was first held is now a huge fairground known as the Theresienwiese, after the royal bride. The Oktoberfest celebration has become a world-class beer event, running for sixteen heady days every autumn in Munich, Germany.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 5.4%

Taste Buds 132: Doppelbock, Shmopplebock (Shmaltz Rejewvenator)

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

From the Brewer: Rejewvenator is half doppelbock, half Belgian style dubbel, and brewed with all natural date juice. The experimental process begins with 5 specialty malts and 5 hop varieties blending European tradition with brazenly innovative American craft beer flavor and attitude. The brewers use Lager yeast to start cold, bottom fermentation then let the beer warm and pitch a hybrid Abbey/Trappist Belgian Ale yeast brought in exclusively for this brew. Finally, all natural Date concentrate pressed on the first day of California’s 2009 harvest gets infused into the fermenter. It then sits and ages for another month before centrifuge filtration and packaging. Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE.  Pliny the Elder, a 1st century Roman naturalist, lauded Judea’s Dates for their succulence and sweetness.

The Beer Box Score

  • Malts: 2-Row specialty, Munich, 2 kinds of dark crystal, CaraVienna
  • Hops:  Warrior, US Goldings, Cascade, Amarillo, Mt. Hood.
  • Yeast:  Lager yeast, Trappist Ale yeast, Abbey ale yeast
  • Dates:  Over 400 gallons of all natural date juice
  • ABV:  7.8%

From Us:  Eric and Dusty put on their yamakas and polish off their… dreidel.  See what happens when they dive headlong into this date saturated Jewbrew from Shmaltz!

Taste Buds 130: We Hoist the Main Sail (Full Sail Amber Ale)

Friday, September 11th, 2009

From the Brewer: In 1989, when we brewed our first batch of Full Sail Amber… not only was it the first Amber ale here in Beer Mecca (aka Oregon) — it was the first craft beer to go into a bottle. And two things became immediately apparent.  It wasn’t Regular and it sure as heck wasn’t Light.

  • ABV:     5.5%
  • Flavor:    sweet, malty, medium-bodied ale with a spicy, floral hop finish

From Us:  Eric and Dusty raise the sail on Full Sail’s Amber Ale.  Find out if it makes it into a safe harbor or if it’s forced to walk the plank on this TGIF episode of Taste Buds!
