Taste Buds 129: Always Bet On Black (New Glarus Black Wheat)

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

From the Brewer: Black Wheat is a rich and chewy bottle conditioned weiss bursting with Midwestern wheat, oats, rye and finished by malted barley. Expect this beer to pour the deepest black body topped by an opulent head of lip smacking foam. Roasted chocolate and toasted caramel notes brim over the top. Lavish spice aromas of clove and cinnamon are promoted naturally by the yeast we import especially for this most individual of brews.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:     5.75%
  • Flavor:     Roasted chocolate and toasted caramel

From Us:  Thankfully Eric and Dusty didn’t have to trudge through Black Forests of Bavaria to find this brewski. Find out what happens when a weiss beer gets toasted and roasted on this Hump Day episode of Taste Buds!

Taste Buds 128: It’ll kick your Allagash! (Allagash Curieux)

Monday, September 7th, 2009

From the Brewer: In October of 2004, we released the first beer in our series of Barrel Aged beers, Allagash Curieux. To make the Curieux (French for “curious”), we age our Tripel Ale in Jim Beam barrels for 8 weeks in our cellar. During the aging process in bourbon barrels, the beer is totally transformed, and many new flavors and aromas develop. Most notably, the beer picks up soft coconut and vanilla characteristics… and also a hint of bourbon flavor!

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 9.5% – 10.5%
  • Original Gravity: 1080
  • Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F
  • Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

From Us: Curiosity supposedly killed the cat.  Will it also kill the Tasty Buds? Or will this curiously complex bourbon barrel aged brew slide down with the greatest of ease?  Put on your big boy britches and dive into this Labor(less) Day holiday edition of Taste Buds!

Taste Buds 127: Shy sluggin gorms neemer (Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout)

Friday, September 4th, 2009

From the Brewer: With its deep, dark brown-black color, thick, full-bodied, velvety-smooth mouth feel, mocha character, and, strong yet subtle hop bite, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of the thickest, richest, and most complex stouts on the market today. In 1990, it became our first gold medal winner, at the Great American Beer Festival.  Barney Flats was judged so superior to the other stouts that no other medals were even awarded in its category. It won the Silver Medal at the 2004 World Beer Cup® and the Bronze Medal at the 2004 GABF, and most recently won the Gold Medal at the 2009 L.A. County Fair International Commercial Beer Competition as well as several other medals.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 5.7%

From Us:  Erik and Dusty chew on some oats… that have been brewed into this thick, rich oatmeal stout from the “Bahl Hornin’” gang out in Boonville, California.  Is it good enough for breakfast?  Find out on this TGIF episode of Taste Bud!

Taste Buds 126: Pray to the Alt-bier (Southampton Altbier)

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

From the Brewer: Altbiers are traditional German copper-brown ales. Prior to the isolation of lager yeasts in the mid 1800s, all beers in Germany were brewed using ale yeasts. The term “Alt,” which literally means “old” or “antique,” is a reference to types of brews made before lagers revolutionized the brewing world. Ale yeasts typically ferment at higher temperatures than lager yeasts and result in products that tend to have a little more fruitiness in flavor and aroma. Southampton Point of Difference:  Southampton Altbier is made with four grains and two hop varieties resulting in a complex yet deceptively drinkable beer. It combines the subtle fruitiness of an ale with the smooth, refreshing finish of a lager. The Beer Box Score

  • Color:  Copper-brown
  • Clarity:  Clear
  • Aroma:  Predominantly malty with a subtle herbal hop note and a faint crisp fruitiness
  • Flavor Characteristics:  Malty flavor, refreshing hop bitterness, finishes clean
  • IBUs: 28
  • ABV: 5.3% ABV
  • Grains: 2-Row Malt, Imported Munich , Wheat, Roasted
  • Hops:  Nugget, Saaz
  • Yeast:  Ale Yeast

From Us:  On this Hump Day edition of Taste Buds, Erik and Dusty find out what it feels like to pray at the alter of beer with an altbier from Southampton in hand.
