Taste Buds 146: BREWDOG! The Most Amazing IPA ever.

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

From the Brewer: After two tempestuous months aging aboard BrewDog founder James Watt’s mackerel trawler on the North Atlantic, Atlantic IPA will be the first commercially available, genuine sea-aged IPA in two centuries.  Made from a 150 year old recipe, the Atlantic IPA is bursting with malt character; biscuit, toast, caramel, pirate ship oak, salt and tobacco. Hints of honey, pine and vanilla are also lurking in the depths of the palate. The generous use of English hops adds a substantial kick to the forefront of the nose and mouth with a smooth slick spicy, earthy herbal quality and a lingering woody bitterness in the finish. You should be so lucky to crack open a bottle of the Atlantic IPA – there are only 960 bottles in the United States.  Be sure to check out the video of this beer’s journey on BrewDog’s website.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 8.5%
  • IBUs: –
  • Malts: –
  • Hops: –
  • Yeast: –
  • Beginning gravity: –
  • Ending gravity: –

From Us: This beer is incredible.  Unlike any other IPA we have ever had.  a very understated hoppiness amongst beautiful malty tones.

Taste Buds 144: Up a Kriek! (New Belgium Transatlantique Kriek)

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

From the Brewer: New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek – a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries. This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon’s brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boon’s offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium’s Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert.  After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek. The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish.  Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 8%

From Us:  From our lips (of Faith)… to your ears.  This brew crossed more than a creek (kriek… get it?) to be made!  And it’s not one you want to miss.

Taste Buds 143: Nice Tatas! (Grand Teton Howling Wolf Weizenbock)

Monday, October 12th, 2009

From the Brewer: “… Was brewed to showcase yeast in the flavor of beer, and was brewed in strict adherence to the Reinheitsgebot. “Weizenbock means strong wheat beer. Wheat contributes a pleasant citric acidity and delicacy on the palate, and its surfet of protein creates a massive head. Howling Wolf was crafted with 40% wheat malt and minimally spiced with Liberty Hops. Like all Bavarian wheat beers, yeast is the star of this show.”

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 8%

From Us:  It’s time to howl like a wolf!  Duran Duran may be passé, but you don’t wan to pass-ay up this strong wheat beer from the gang at Grand Teton.  Watch  and see what happens when Erik and Dusty unleash the wolf inside!

Taste Buds 142:Kid’s Bike Seats & Nut Butter (Sierra Nevada Kellerweis)

Friday, October 9th, 2009

From the Brewer: Kellerweis is one of the only American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. This difficult and labor-intensive technique adds uncommon depth and flavor complexity. Our hazy-golden hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day. To serve, pour two-thirds into a glass, swirl and pour the rest.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 4.8%
  • IBUs: 15
  • Bittering hops Perle or Sterling
  • Malts: Two-row Pale, Wheat, Munich
  • Yeast: Ale Yeast
  • Beginning Gravity: 12.8 Plato
  • Ending Gravity: 3.5 Plato

From Us:  We once again have Anna Nadasdy from Sierra Nevada on the show as we feature Kellerwies.  Be sure to watch… ‘cuz the wheels come off the bus in this episode!
