Taste Buds 165: Lucky 13 (Firestone Walker 13)

Monday, November 30th, 2009

From the Brewer: In years past Firestone’s anniversary releases have sold out at the brewery in just a few weeks and these beers have garnered a hefty price tag in the market. Brewmaster Matt Brynildson again enlisted the help of Paso Robles area wine makers to assist in the blending of several barrel-aged beers into the final product. Barley wines, imperial stouts and an imperial brown are just a few of the beers making up the final blend. Many of the component beers have spent over 2 years aging in a combination of retired bourbon, rye, and wine barrels. As a finished beer, Firestone Walker 13 is more sublime then last year’s blend. It is all about the subtleties and quiet tones. It has deep dark chocolate notes and is accented with dried fruit and licorice. There are hints of molasses and even a little cherry in the middle complimenting the vanilla and coconut notes brought in by the oak. These barrel qualities are very well integrated and meld well with the roast malt and caramel undertones. It is best enjoyed in a half filled brandy snifter or wine glass. 13 is only available to select accounts in limited quantities throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington and Oregon. Only 1,000 cases were made. For sale in 22 oz bombers at a suggested retail price of $21.99.

Taste Buds 163: Yeti are mean! (Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti)

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

From the Brewer: Welcome to the newest incarnation of our revered imperial stout, Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti. We toned down the hops a bit to allow cocoa nibs to contribute some pleasing bitterness, while vanilla notes from the oak combine with the cocoa to create an aroma and flavor akin to a gourmet chocolate bar. A dash of cayenne keeps things lively, adding just a bit of heat to the finish.

Taste Buds 160: Red Sox Beer (Narragansett Lager)

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

From the Brewer: We brew our lager with six row malt, seedless hops, corn from Iowa, our lager strain (the same one the brewery has depended on since just after Prohibition), and the purest water from Lakes Ontario and Hemlock.  Narragansett has the highest rating of all domestic premium lagers on BeerAdvocate.com, and received the bronze medal for American Lagers at the 2008 World Beer Cup. The Lager is old reliable.  It was the first beer brewed by “The Original Six” back in 1890, the bestselling beer in New England from the 1930s to the 1970s, and the official beer of the Boston Red Sox from 1944-1975. The lager and light beers are brewed in Rochester, NY at a brewery that’s been producing award-winning beers for more than 125 years. The bock and porter are craft-brewed in Providence, RI and Pawcatuck, CT.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  5%
  • IBUs:  12
  • Hops:  NA
  • Malts:  NA
  • Original Gravity:  NA

From Us:    You’ve probably never heard of Narragansett Beer unless you were born and raised on the East Coast.  Erik and Dusty crack open a tallboy can of this old school beer that’s making a comeback. Watch the episode then go out and get yourself a ‘Gansett!

Taste Buds 158: My friends call me… (Steamworks Ale Diablo)

Friday, November 13th, 2009

From the Brewer: Ale Diablo pours with a golden yellow haze, with a bright white head of foam. It has an aroma of peppery spice and fruity, clove-like notes but also has a soft tartness of green apple with slight malt sweetness and a underpinning of citrus derived from the use of Riesling grape must. This sinfully good blonde ale is true to its name and devilicous!

  • IBUs:  33
  • Hops:  NA
  • Malts:  NA
  • Original Gravity:  NA
