Taste Buds 189: Malvert See Red (Odell Red Ale)

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

From the Brewer: The Rocky Mountain Goat is no ordinary goat. Just like Odell Red is no ordinary red.  We took the American-style red to a whole new level by adding a variety of aggressive American hops—giving this ale a distinctive fresh hop aroma and flavor. We think you’ll agree this red has some serious kick.

  • ABV:  6.5%
  • IBUs:  50
  • OG: NA
  • Hops:  NA
  • Malts:  NA

From Us:  This week Erik the Red and Dusty the Goat kick it up a notch with an ale made with aggressive American hops from our good friends at Odell Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Taste Buds 188: Time for 12 oz. Deadlifts! (Widmer Deadlift Imperial IPA)

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

<br /> <h1>188</h1> <p>beer IPA Widmere</p> <p><a href="www.veeple.com" alt="Veeple Interactive Video">Veeple Interactive Video</a>

From the Brewer: Come rain, sleet or a city-wide blackout, Widmer Brothers Brewing, based in Portland, OR, is launching Deadlift Imperial IPA.  Despite a power outage that forced the brewery to abandon 62,000 pints of the beer mid-way through the brewing process, the brewery’s first Imperial IPA is now available! Deadlift’s flavor stems in part from the Nelson Sauvin hops imported from South Island’s Nelson, New Zealand’s top hop growing region.  These hops have an intense citrus, fruity, beer-like aroma and flavor not found in any other variety giving Deadlift a simple but fully braces malt backbone with enough malty sweetness and caramel character to complement the incredibly robust hop aroma and flavor. Deadlift is available on tap and in bottles year-round at select West Coast retailers for  a suggested retail price of $8.99 per four-pack.  This is the first time Widmer has offered a four-pack instead of a traditional six-pack.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  8.6%
  • IBUs:  70
  • OG: 21.0° PLATO
  • Hops:  Bittering – Alchemy;  Aroma – Nelson Sauvin, Cascade, Willamette;  Dry Hopped – Nelson Sauvin, Cascade, Willamette
  • Malts:  2-Row Pale, Carapils, Caramel 10-L

From Us:  This week Erik and Dusty try to get into shape by doing some Deadlifts… the 12 oz. Imperial IPA kind, provided by the Brothers Widmer!

Taste Buds 187: Lumbergh Drank It! (Trinity Brewing TPS Report)

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

From the Brewer: If you love the funky side of Belgium then you will love our TPS Report. The grain bill for this beer includes flaked oats and flaked wheat, and the recipe is flavored with tangerine and lemon zests. Fermented 100% with a very rare variety of the wild yeast, Brettanomyces, this beer is the funky funky farmhouse, wet wool, and heavy leather. Bottled once a year and triple fermented for authenticity. The name of this beer comes from fermenting the first experimental batch back in our office.  We have a printer that doesn’t always cooperate and those 2 things inspired the name/label art. TPS Report won the 2009 GABF Gold Medal in the “experimental beer” category.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  4.8%
  • IBUs:  NA
  • OG: NA
  • Hops: NA
  • Malts:  NA
  • Other Ingredients:  Lots of stuff, see above.

From Us:  This week Erik and Dusty dive into a TPS report they can really enjoy.   This particular TPS Report hails from Trinity Brewing Company in Colorado Springs and won the 2009 GABF gold medal in the experimental beer category.

Taste Buds 186: I see a little silouhette of a Pils (Sam Adams Noble Pils)

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

From the Brewer: The Noble Pils is special because of the quality and quantity of the hops in the recipe.  Similar to a traditional Czech Pilsner, our Pils is brewed with a blend of 5 Noble Hop varieties from each of the world’s only remaining Noble Hop growing regions. The spicy, herbal and citrus hop character is well balanced by the Weyermann Bohemian Pilsner malt, adding honeyed malt character and full body without sweetness. Replaces White Ale as the spring seasonal and in the Brewermaster’s Collection 12-pack.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  5.2%
  • IBUs:  NA
  • OG: 12.1 Plato
  • Hops: Hallertau Mittelfrueh, Tettnang Tettnanger, Spalt Spalter, Saaz and Hersbrucker
  • Malts: Two row Harringont, Metcalfe, and Czech pilsner
  • Calories:  161

From Us:  On this week’s episode of Taste Buds Erik and Dusty try to be of noble character as they suck down the latest Beer Lover’s Choice winner from Sam Adams – the Noble Pils.
