Taste Buds 225: Two Radiant S.O.B.’s (Ninkasi Brewing Radiant Summer Ale)

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

From the Brewer: Crisp and flavorful, Radiant Summer Ale is a clean finishing summer offering in the Ninkasi tradition. The smooth malt character is balanced by a elegant hop bitterness, the perfect compliment to a glorious summer day.

The Beer Box Score

  • Style:  American Pale Ale
  • ABV: 6%
  • IBUs: 40
  • Hops: Dry-hopped with Liberty hops
  • Malts:  NA
  • Rapid Classification Ranking:  Class III (Big Boy Britches)

New Methodology:  We respect beer too much to judge it. Every beer has its place and time. But we know that wading through the deluge of craft brews can be intimidating… even dangerous. That’s why we’ve created the “Rapid Classification System,” a simple yet powerful tool that will help you navigate the beerscape. The RCS takes the fear out of beer tasting by showing you exactly how rough it will be on your palate. The Rapid Classification System on Taste Buds… another great innovation from the muddled minds at Beer Tap TV!

From Us:  This week on Taste Buds Erik and Dusty get radiant after drinking a fantastic summer ale from Oregon’s Ninkasi Brewing.

Taste Buds 219: A Beer We Can’t Pronounce (Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel)

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

From the Brewer: The HOUBLON CHOUFFE was brewed for the first time in 2006.  It is an ‘Indian Pale ale’ type of beer, with a harmonious balance between a marked bitterness (three types of hops are used to make it) and a pleasant fruitiness.  The HOUBLON CHOUFFE is unfiltered, and re-fermented in the bottle as well as in the keg. A unique marriage between the English tradition of IPAs, the new American revolution of Imperial IPAs and the classic Belgian way of brewing. Houblon Chouffe, although very much hopped as it is, showcases the unique balance between a very strong IPA and a very special Belgian Tripel exclusively created for this ale (Big malty body, distinct dryness, expressive estery fruitiness).

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 9%
  • IBUs: 59
  • Hops: NA
  • Malts: NA
  • Rapid Classification Ranking: Class III (Big Boy Britches)

New Methodology:  We respect beer too much to judge it. Every beer has its place and time. But we know that wading through the deluge of craft brews can be intimidating… even dangerous. The RCS takes the fear out of beer tasting by showing you exactly how rough it will be on your palate. The Rapid Classification System on Taste Buds… another great innovation from the muddled minds at Beer Tap TV!

From Us:  On today’s episode of Taste Buds Erik and Dusty pull out the Belgian to English dictionary and still can’t figure out how to pronounce the name of this IPA Tripel correctly. Still, the Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen is one damn fine brew!

Taste Buds 218: A Lesson in Boontling (Anderson Valley Hop Ottin’ IPA)

Monday, June 7th, 2010

From the Brewer: The name means “hard working hops,” in Boontling, and that tells it all. Generous additions of high-alpha Pacific Northwest hops added during a vigorous boil, plus traditional dry hopping, with whole hop cones, give this ale a delicious citrus aroma, and an intense hoppy bite. This IPA is a hop lover’s dream. Hop Ottin’ IPA received a Silver Medal from the 2001 World Beer Championships, in the India Pale Ale category, and has several other medals as well.  “Hop Ottin’ bites like a can-kicky bluetail.”

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV: 7%
  • IBUs: 80
  • Hops: NA
  • Malts: NA
  • Rapid Classification Ranking: Class IV (Taste Buds Overboard)

New Methodology:  We respect beer too much to judge it. Every beer has its place and time. But we know that wading through the deluge of craft brews can be intimidating… even dangerous. From Us:  On today’s episode of Taste Buds Erik and Dusty help cure the Monday blahs and teach you to decipher phrases like, “Hop Ottin’ bites like a can-kicky bluetail.”  There’s a little bit of Boontling in every bottle of Anderson Valley Hop Ottin’ IPA.
