Taste Buds 187: Lumbergh Drank It! (Trinity Brewing TPS Report)

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

From the Brewer: If you love the funky side of Belgium then you will love our TPS Report. The grain bill for this beer includes flaked oats and flaked wheat, and the recipe is flavored with tangerine and lemon zests. Fermented 100% with a very rare variety of the wild yeast, Brettanomyces, this beer is the funky funky farmhouse, wet wool, and heavy leather. Bottled once a year and triple fermented for authenticity. The name of this beer comes from fermenting the first experimental batch back in our office.  We have a printer that doesn’t always cooperate and those 2 things inspired the name/label art. TPS Report won the 2009 GABF Gold Medal in the “experimental beer” category.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  4.8%
  • IBUs:  NA
  • OG: NA
  • Hops: NA
  • Malts:  NA
  • Other Ingredients:  Lots of stuff, see above.

From Us:  This week Erik and Dusty dive into a TPS report they can really enjoy.   This particular TPS Report hails from Trinity Brewing Company in Colorado Springs and won the 2009 GABF gold medal in the experimental beer category.

Taste Buds 186: I see a little silouhette of a Pils (Sam Adams Noble Pils)

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

From the Brewer: The Noble Pils is special because of the quality and quantity of the hops in the recipe.  Similar to a traditional Czech Pilsner, our Pils is brewed with a blend of 5 Noble Hop varieties from each of the world’s only remaining Noble Hop growing regions. The spicy, herbal and citrus hop character is well balanced by the Weyermann Bohemian Pilsner malt, adding honeyed malt character and full body without sweetness. Replaces White Ale as the spring seasonal and in the Brewermaster’s Collection 12-pack.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  5.2%
  • IBUs:  NA
  • OG: 12.1 Plato
  • Hops: Hallertau Mittelfrueh, Tettnang Tettnanger, Spalt Spalter, Saaz and Hersbrucker
  • Malts: Two row Harringont, Metcalfe, and Czech pilsner
  • Calories:  161

From Us:  On this week’s episode of Taste Buds Erik and Dusty try to be of noble character as they suck down the latest Beer Lover’s Choice winner from Sam Adams – the Noble Pils.

Taste Buds 180: We get nuked… by a Penguin! (BrewDog Tactical Nuclear Penguin)

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

From the Brewer: Tactical Nuclear Penguin is bold, irreverent and uncompromising. The Antarctic name inducing schizophrenia of this uber-imperial stout originates from the amount of time it spent exposed to extreme cold. This beer began life as a 10% imperial stout 18 months ago. The beer was aged for 8 months in an Isle of Arran whiskey cask and 8 months in an Islay cask making it our first double cask aged beer. After an intense 16 month, the final stages took a ground breaking approach by storing the beer at -20 degrees for three weeks to get it to 32%. A beer like Tactical Nuclear Penguin should be enjoyed in spirit sized measures.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  32%
  • IBUs:  NA
  • OG: 1092
  • Hops:  Galena, Bramling Cross
  • Malts:  Marris Otter, Dark Crystal, Caramalt, Chocolate Malt, Roast Barley
  • Twist:  Frozen by Penguins for 3 weeks at an ice cream factory resulting in the world’s strongest ever beer (ever)

From Us:  When the world’s strongest ABV beer is brewed by Dogs and frozen by Penguins… what can go wrong?  Find out what happens to Erik and Dusty’s innards on this week’s one and only episode of Taste Buds!

Taste Buds 179: We fade to black! (Left Hand Fade to Black)

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

From the Brewer: Fade to Black pours black with notes of licorice, espresso beans, molasses, and black cardamom notes. It ties into that time of year when we fall backwards an hour, this year from November 1st until March 14th. Creatively brewed to pair with shorter, darker days. Its 8.5% ABV gives way to a feeling of self loathing, burnt opportunities and smoked relationships. And like “some late visitor entreating entrance at your chamber door”, six different malts and two different hop varieties create the “darkness there, and nothing more.” Available in 6 packs and kegs.

The Beer Box Score

  • ABV:  8.5%
  • IBUs:  30
  • Plato: 18
  • Hops:  Magnum and US Goldings
  • Malts:  Pale 2-row, roasted barley, black malt, chocolate malt, cara-Aromoa and Malted Wheat
  • Availability:   November 1st until March 14th;  distributed throughout Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan (western only), Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Alaska, Washington, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee (Nashville only), Georgia, North Carolina, and select European countries.

From Us:  The glow of the holiday season has already faded, but we have a lot to look forward to in the new year!  Dusty and Erik start it off with a stout from Left Hand that is sure to become a legend.
