There was a competition in Milwaukee for the best beer. Only 12 breweries of the more than 1200 showed up. The two front runners were Busch and Pabst. There were some judging "mistakes" in that it is really never know who actaully won. "Pabst scored a 94.6 and Busch a 94.3 were declared as the final results. Pabst announced himself the grand prize will and celebrated by drappign his brewery in blue ribbon and giving the workers the day off." (Ogle, 2006, pg 130-133) Info found in Ambitious Brew: The story of American Beer.
The beer was originally called Best Select, then Pabst Select and finally Pabst Blue Ribbon. A blue ribbon was tied around the bottle neck; this practice ran from 1882 until 1916. The ribbon was to commemorate the win at the Exposition. It is unclear if it actually took place in 1882 or 1883.

Great show again as usual. Thanks for the beer news.

I agree with BreweryReviewery and would add that Pabst stopped hand tying silk blue ribbons on their bottles during World War II due to the rationing of silk. To replace the silk ribbons, the company introduced the Blue Ribbon logo in which is still the recognizable logo for the beer to this day.

.....I'm in the EST time zone and still can't come in first when youze guyz are late! Dang, dang, double dang!

best select won the blue ribbon in 1893 at the columbia exposition and the company began the practice of putting blue slik ribbon around the neck of there best select bottle and changed the name after enthusiast began asking the bartenders to serve up the beer that won the blue ribbon the pabst part of the name comes from frederick pabst who married into the best family and brought in to the business in 1863
